Military Medal 'On the night of 1st October, 1917, near Wieltje this N.C.O. was with a section supplying ammunition to Batteries when the column came under hostile shellfire causing a momentary stampede amongst the wagon teams. Corporal Loffagen first stopped a team which bolted along a road full of transport and troops, and then returned to where another wagon and team were in difficulties, and, taking control, soon had the wagon and five horses clear. One horse was killed and a driver wounded, but although this N.C.O. was himself wounded, he attended to the wounded driver and then carried on with his work in 4th column. Throughout he displayed great courage and disregard for personal safety, and set a splendid example to his comrades.'
