Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field near Bancourt from 30th August to 1st September 1918. During the above operations this NCO took charge of a platoon when the platoon commander and senior NCOs had been put out of action. The enemy counter attacked on the morning of the 31st August, and his platoon was badly shaken, but by his splendid example and disregard of personal danger and devotion to duty he kept them in their positions and repelled the onslaught of the enemy. His leadership and skill in reorganising during the action of 30th and 31st, showed a high degree of courage and ability, and was of the greatest assistance to a Company left with only one officer.'
