War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 15 February 1917; awarded 2 days' detention, and forfeited 1 day's pay under Royal Warrant, at sea, 24 March 1917 (charge not specified); disembarked Devonport, England, 26 April 1917, and marched into Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 26 May 1917; joined 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 18 June 1917, and posted to A Company. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 2 September 1917, of charge of being absent without leave, in that he absented himself without leave from 7.20 pm, 16 August 1917, after being warned for duty in the trenches on the same day until apprehended at Steenwerck about 8.30 pm, 19 August 1917: awarded 7 years' penal servitude; two years of sentence remitted.
