Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At Hebuterne on 16th July 1918 when in charge of a post, after our advance the enemy counter attacked in very superior force which necessitated a withdrawal of his party. After bringing fire to bear on the enemy and having sized up the position he ordered his men to take up a new line slightly in rear himself covering the withdrawal, standing on the parapet, bombing and firing on the oncoming enemy until severely wounded. L/Corpl Lewis up to the time of being wounded set such a fine example to his section by his inititative and personal bravery, that to their action was largely due the comparative ease with which the temporarily lost post was re-established.'
