X Battery, Medium Trench Mortars, New Zealand Field Artillery 'This NCO has served in the Trench Mortars for the past fifteen months, with only one short break in hospital, when he was recovering from wounds received in a premature explosion at the 6 inch Trench Mortar School. On December 3rd, 1917,
during the barrage for the attack on Polderhoek Chateau, this NCO's mortar was subjected to severe machine-gun and artillery fire, and early in the shoot he was hit in the hand by a bullet, but still continued to serve his mortar, and loaded 218 bombs (the total weight of these is 5 tons) and carried on until ordered to cease fire. Bombardier Lemon has participated in the majority of the shoots conducted by this battery, and by his coolness has always been a splendid example to the men in his detachment when under heavy fire.'
