Military Medal 'Operations during advance east of Cambrai, 13 October/11 November 1918. On the 1st November at Valenciennes he was in charge of a patrol which went forward to a sector of ground in front of the Infantry line. The patrol came under very heavy enemy machine fun fire from both flanks, nevertheless he succeeded in working forward, Sgt Lees acting as point. Eventually they were shelled and forced to withdraw but he brought back valuable info. Sgt Lees showed great initiative in
handling this patrol and by his skilful directions brought the patrol back without any casualties. He has proved on this and other occasions a courageous NCO setting a splendid example to the men.'
