Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 19th October 1917 on road at Gravenstafel Private Leef's platoon was forming up the road to allow passages of pack mules and field guns. The road came under shellfire from guns of heavy calibre. It was essential to have the road ready for traffic as artillery had orders to have guns in position as quickly as possible. In spite of continued shelling Leef remained at his work showing a great disregard for danger. He was thrown down by concussion of a shell and partly buried. He extricated himself and calmly continued with his work.'
