Embarked Egypt to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 6 April 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 10 June 1916; promoted Corporal, 26 July 1916. Wounded in action, 27 September 1916 (gun shot wound, jaw and face), and admitted to 36th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 5th General Hospital, 28 September 1916; to England, 4 October 1916, and admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 5 October 1916; transferred to War Hospital, Croydon, 3 November 1916; attached on strength, NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 10 May 1917; attached on strength, NZ Command Depot, Codford, 31 May 1917. Admitted to No 3 NZ General Hospital, Codford, 30 June 1917; transferred to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 1 August 1917; to Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, 9 January 1918.
