Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while with an advanced guard. The enemy opened heavy enfilade rifle and machine-gun fire on his left flank. By skilful handling of his platoons he completely held in check for two hours the superior numbers of the enemy, and finally withdrew his men in good order. He showed fine courage and leadership.'
