Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty as stretcher bearer. Throughout the whole operations he carried out his work with tireless energy and with utter disregard for personal safety. He continually went into "No Man's Land" under heavy machine-gun fire and carried wounded men in. His devotion to duty was the means of saving many lives.'
