Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He marked out the assembly position for his company under a heavy barrage, and led his company with great ability in the attack. The unit on his left lost direction during the advance, causing a serious gap in the line, but he filled the gap in a most skilful manner and saved a dangerous situation. He moved about under heavy shellfire along the while front of the battalion, organising consolidation. His cool daring and good leadership were a magnificent example to his men and did much to ensure the success of the operations.'
