Proceeded overseas to France, 26 May 1917; joined 1st Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 18 June 1917, and posted to C Company.Admitted to 3rd NZ Field Ambulance, 10 July 1917 (mumps), and transferred same day to 61st Casualty Clearing Station; discharged to duty, 1 August 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 4 August 1917.

Admitted to 3rd NZ Field Ambulance, 4 August 1917 (debility); transferred to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 5 August 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 16 August 1917.

Wounded in action, 8 September 1917 (gun shot wound, chest); admitted to 77th Field Ambulance, 9 September 1917, and transferred same day to No 2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station; rejoined Bn, in the field, 18 September 1917.
