Disembarked Suez, 14 February 1916.

Joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, 7 March 1916, and posted to 14th Company.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 9 April 1916.

Found guilty, 7 August 1916, of (1) neglect of duty in that he failed to carry water, 5 August; (2) being absent from billet from 12 noon till 11.30 pm, 6 August: awarded 28 days? Field Punishment No 2, forfeited 28 days' pay, and 1 additional day's pay.

Wounded in action, 15 September 1916 (gun shot wound, left arm), and admitted to No 2 Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 1/1 South Midland Casualty Clearing Station; to 23rd General Hospital, Etaples, 18 September 1916; to England, 24 September 1916, and admitted to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 25 September 1916.

Commenced return to New Zealand on board HS 'Marama', 13 January 1917; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action), 8 May 1917.

Total war service: 1 year 192 days(of which 1 year 61 days were abroad)
