Mention in Despatches 'Operations near Flers, Somme, 16th September 1916. This officer, after the officer commanding his company and two other officers had been killed, took over command of his Company and set a fine example of courage and devotion to duty to his men when siting and consolidating the new trench, remaining all day under heavy shellfire, the trench being continually blown in and men buried. Again in the line east of Armentieres in November 1916 this officer displayed great gallantry during the enemy bombardment when the Germans entered our line. On this occasion Lieut Barry stuck to his post to the last although his arm was shattered.' Awarded, and promulgated, 'London Gazette', 1 June 1917. |
