Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, 8 April 1916. Appointed Acting Bombardier, 19 May 1916; promoted Bombardier, 19 May 1916. Admitted to No 1 NZ Casualty Clearing Station, 28 July 1916; transferred to No 3 Field Ambulance, 28 July 1916; to NZ Divisional Rest Station, 28 July 1916 (influenza); discharged to and rejoined unit, 3 August 1916. Promoted Corporal, 6 November 1916, and appointed Acting Sergeant. On leave to United Kingdom, 25 July 1917. Married Alice May EXETER, spinster, All Souls' Church, Camberwell, 28 July 1917. Rejoined unit from leave, 6 August 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 20 December 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 8 January 1918. Posted to NZDivisional Ammunition Column, 21 April 1918. Injured on duty; soldier not to blame, 5 August 1918 (statement by Bdr Robert AULD: 'He was leading two horses to water, when one of them shied, & knocked him down.
