Mention in Despatches 'February 26th to September 29th, 1917. This Officer has served in the New Zealand Trench Mortars since the formation of the Batteries and has always shown great energy and bravery. His preparation for the Messines Battle was very thorough, mortars being well placed and plenty of ammunition brought to the front. The enemy's retaliatory fire was severe, two pits were destroyed, but Captain Joplin in all cases fired his allotment of ammunition and completed his tasks. He himself is always to be seen in the most exposed positions cheering his men up. The good work done by the heavy Trench Mortars is largely due to him.'
