Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near Havrincourt Wood on 12th September 1918. As a Company Stretcher-bearer he performed magnificently under very heavy shell and machine-gun fire. He succeeded in getting many wounded men of his Company from "No Man's Land" where they had fallen in front of their objective. This was an extremely difficult task as the enemy swept the ground with machine-guns, but notwithstanding this he persisted in his gallant work and having attended to the wounded to the best of his ability, proceeded with his party to carry them to the regimental aid post. His cheerfulness and courage under fire was a splendid example to all who came in contact with him.'
