Military Medal 'Operations: Flers Support Trench, north West of Flers, 21st September 1916. This man was number 1 of a Vickers machine-gun on our right flank in Goose Alley. The enemy launched a surprise bombing attack during the night and forced our infantry back along the sap. Realising the situation Private Joll handed his gun over the his "number two", rallied the infantry, and jumping upon the parapet, bombed the enemy. His action undoubtedly helped to save a very critical situation. He was wounded during this work.'
