Military Medal 'For gallantry and devotion to duty at Messines on the 7th, 8th, and 9th June 1917. Rifleman Johnston was the only Company Runner surviving the assault, and during the 39 hours following, he repeatedly carried despatches through a very heavy shellfire. By his determination and courage his Company Commander was able to maintain constant communication with Battalion Headquarters.'
