'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when his regiment had crossed the river and a squadron was sent forward to attempt a surprise attack. He was in charge of the advance guard, and came suddenly on a post of nineteen enemy infrantrymen. Calling to his troop to follow him, he galloped straight at the enemy, and in spite of determined resistance captured the whole post.'
