Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the advance on Welsh Ridge on 28th September the Company of which Sergeant-Major Johnsen was C.S.M., lost touch on both its flanks. This NCO, personally went out in the darkness under heavy rifle and machine-gun fire and after great difficulty succeeded in locating the troops on the Company's right and enabled liaison to be established. When his Company commenced to consolidate, this NCO again went out under heavy fire, collected the Platoons and Sections which had become scattered and directed them to the trench the Company was consolidating. During the whole operations he showed a splendid example of unflinching courage, grit and determination and it was largely due to his personal efforts that his Company was extricated from a very awkward situation and enabled to consolidate.'
