'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the operations at Grevillers on 24th August 1918 had command of two machine-guns and did valuable reconnaissance work in face of heavy enemy machine gun fire. He placed his guns boldly forward, and by supporting and covering fire reduced the volume of enemy fire. During the assault his skilful siting of the guns silenced several enemy machine guns which were inflicting heavy casualties on our Infantry. His coolness and courage was a fine example which inspired his men with confidence.'
