Taken on strength, 3rd Bn, Wellington Infantry Regiment, and posted to 11th Company, Codford, 24 April 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 27 May 1917.

Admitted to No 4 NZ Field Ambulance, 23 June 1917; transferred to 53rd Casualty Clearing Station, 24 June 1917; to No 7 General Hospital, St Omer, 25 June 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 5 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 30 November 1917 (gun shot wound, left hand and forearm, right forearm, knees: severe), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 1 December 1917, and same day to No 54 General Hospital; to England, 24 January 1918, and admitted same day to Lewisham Military Hospital; transferred to No 1 NZ General hospital, Brockenhurst, 3 March 1918.

Classified 'unfit' by Medical Board, 26 March 1918, and placed on NZ Roll.

Commenced return to New Zealand from Avonmouth on board HMNZT 'Marama', 6 April 1918; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action), 6 August 1918
