Military Medal 'At Gravenstafel east of Ypres on 4th October 1917. For gallant conduct and devotion to duty when working as a Stretcher Bearer. When holding the advanced front line, under particularly heavy shell fire, a man was badly wounded out in a small post. This man immediately went out in full view of the enemy, bound up the wounded man, carried him back to a small trench and amid a hurricane of shells, had him conveyed back to the Aid Post. Undoubtedly his gallant conduct and quickness of action saved this man's life, as otherwise, he would have certainly bled to death. Pte James subsequently did very fine work as a stretcher bearer, during the actual attack. He was invariably set a splendid example of devotion to duty and utter disregard of danger.'
