'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 12th October 1917, during the attack on the Belle Vue Spur, this soldier was a member of a Company assaulting two concrete positions from which the enemy were maintaining a withering machine-gun fire. This man gradually worked around the flank of the position, and by continuous sniping forced the enemy to take cover, and thereby helped considerably to capture these positions. By conspicuous bravery in his going on spite of the enemy?s fire, he undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades. During the remainder of this operation he showed further devotion to duty and his work was an example to all, and worthy of the highest praise.'
