War service: Western Front Court martialled for desertion: found guilty, and senteced to be shot. Executed 5am, 25 August 1916, and buried in commoner's grave (the first New Zealand soldier to be executed in World War I). Under the Pardon for Soldiers of the Great War Act 2000, the five New Zealand soldiers executed during the war were posthumously pardoned. |
