'Operation: British front line South of Hebuterne. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 4th June 1918. Under cover of a Trench Mortar bombardment acting Lance Corporal Howie led a patrol, consisting of 4 men besides himself, in a raid on a strongly garrisoned enemy post. Immediately the bombardment lifted, a patrol, under dauntless leadership, rushed the post, only to find the garrison had retired because of the shelling. Posting one man in the post, and one beyond it, Howie proceeded with the remaining two to a point about 50 yards further towards the enemy lines, where he captured a prisoner, returning with him safely to our lines. The enterprise was carried out with the greatest boldness and decision, and was the more commendable from being carried out at midday, and in the face of a much raided and consequently alert enemy.'

Military Medal

'On 18/9/16, when his Company was advancing across the open to Flers under a heavy barrage of fire, a high explosive shell landed amongst Pte Howie?s platoon causing confusion. Pte Howie coolly rallied his section and assumed command of it until they obtained cover. Again on the night of 26/27th September in company with the officer in charge of a patrol he successfully reconnoitred the enemy wire defences in face of bombing posts and machine-gun emplacements, thereby gaining valuable information for the attack on the following day.'
