Embarked Alexandria with unit to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli Campaign), 12 April 1915. Admitted to HS 'Goorkha', 3 May 1915 (bullet wounds, both thighs); transferred to No.2 Western General Hospital, Manchester, 16 May 1915; to NZ Auxiliary Hospital, 11 August 1915; discharged to furlough, 1 October 1915. Detailed on command at London Records Office, 12 January 1916, appointed to the substantive rank of Corporal the same day, and appointed Temporary Staff Sergeant while employed in Records Office. Admitted to No.2 NZ General Hospital, Walton on Thames, 28 July 1916. Classified unfit for active service, 18 January 1918.
