Military Medal 'Operation: British Front near Ruyaulcourt 4th September 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the morning of the 4th September 1918, when the advance of Private Barker's Company was held up by the enemy machine gun, trench mortar and 77mm gun fire, and the men were lying in exposed positions, he pushed his Lewis Gun ahead of the Company and engaged the most deadly of the machine guns as well as the 77mm guns. By the bravery of his action he enabled a large number of the Company to get back into the shelter of the trench. His work was worthy of special notice and gave great confidence to his men.'
