Proceeded overseas to France, 20 August 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 8 September 1916, and posted to 10th Company.

Wounded in action, 15 September 1916 (gun shot wound, right arm), and admitted to 1/3 Northumbrian Field Ambulance, and transferred to South Midland Division Casualty Clearing Station; to 1st South African General Hospital, 16 September 1916; to No 3 General Hospital, Le Treport, 19 September 1916; to England, 26 September 1916, and admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 27 September 1916; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 3 October 1916; discharged to NZ Command Depot, Codford, 11 November 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 27 February 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 30 March 1917.

Promoted Corporal, 12 June 1917.
