'At Flers during the attack by this Battalion on 16th September, and during the two following days this man was one of the Battalion Runners, and repeatedly took messages both by day and by night to the Companies in the Front Line. To do this he had to cross open country which was continuously shelled, and swept by machine gun fire from the right. On several occasions he volunteered to take messages when it was not his turn for duty. Throughout the action he showed great coolness and bravery.'
