'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Passchendaele Ridge on 12th October 1917. When all Platoon Officers and Sergeants of his Company were killed or wounded, this NCO collected all men of the Company he could find and consolidated his position. His conduct throughout the operations was such that his men had great confidence in him and he was of great assistance to his Company Commander.'
