Transferred to Infantry Brigade, Tel el Kebir, 21 April 1916, and posted to Otago Infantry Regiment, 22 April 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 20 May 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 7 July 1916, and posted to 4th Company.

Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 22 December 1916 (tracheitis); rejoined unit, 31 December 1916.

Found guilty, 31 January 1917, of losing Government property: awarded 3 days' Field Punishment No 2, and ordered to pay 1/3d for lost articles.

Found guilty, 16 February 1917, of being absent without leave, 8-9.20 pm: awarded 3 days' Field Punishment No 2.
