War service: Egypt, Western Front. Posted to 9th Reinforcements, Otago Mounted Rifles, Trentham Military Camp, 23 August 1915. Appointed Corporal, Trentham Military Camp, 17 September 1915. Appointed Second Lieutenant, Trentham Military Camp, 5 October 1915. Embarked Wellington, 8 January 1916; disembarked Suez, Egypt, 12 February 1916. Transferred to 2nd Bn, Wellington Regiment, 11 March 1916, and taken on strength the same day. Embarked with unit to join British Expeditionary Force in France, 9 April 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 17 April 1917. Admitted to No.2 NZ Field Ambulance, in the field, 5 July 1916 (insomnia); rejoined unit, 8 July 1916. Found guilty by Field General Courts Martial, 29 August 1916, of drunkenness while on Active Service: sentenced to be dismissed from His Majesty's service; sentence confirmed to GOC, and commuted to as if appointment to rank of Second Lieutenant bore the date of 30 August 1916, and severely reprimanded.
