Military Medal 'Operations: British Front near Ruyalcourt 4th September 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the above operation Private Bannatyne showed great resource and initiative in saving the men of his section from becoming casualties. During a particularly hot period of the attack, he assumed command of the Lewis Gun Section after the leader became a casualty. The enemy was making deadly use of his machine guns and light trench mortars and the slightest movement meant almost certain casualty. He directed all the men in his section to secure cover in an adjacent trench whilst he covered their advance with his Lewis Gun. His work in this instance deserved the highest praise. He succeeded in killing a number of the enemy and displayed a sense of leadership which gave great confidence to the men he worked with.'
