Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Private Hawkes is a Company runner. At the beginning of the attack near Esnes on the 8th October 1918, his Company came under heavy enemy shellfire, and the other runners of his Company became casualties, thus leaving Private Hawkes the duty of carrying back all messages. Between his Company and Battalion Headquarters the enemy had a heavy barrage laid down, and Private Hawkes twice went hrough this barrage with important messages. After the objective was reached he had again to go back through a barrage which he did successfully with an absolute disregard of personal safety.'
