War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 10 October 1915; disembarked Suez from HT 'Maunganui', 15 November 1915. Embarked Alexandria for Marsa Matruh, 19 December 1915; disembarked Alexandria, 18 February 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 6 April 1916; joined 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 12 August 1916, and posted to C Company. Detached to Brigade Headquarters, 12 August 1916; rejoined Bn, 8 January 1917. Wounded in action, 10 September 1917 (shell shock: 'Soldier was subjected to shell explosion in course of his duty'), and admitted to 41st Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to No 4 Stationary Hospital, Arques, 12 September 1917; to 59th General Hospital, St Omer, 1 October 1917; to England, 10 November 1917, and admitted to Military Hospital, Tooting, 11 November 1917. Classified 'unfit' by Medical Board.
