Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations near Ruyaulcourt. He was in command of a company which was temporarily held up by machine-gun fire and four 77mm guns, which were firing over sights. After reconnoitring the position he directed fire on the enemy's guns, and then went forward to reconnoitre again. Running against an enemy machine-gun post, he rushed it single-handed, capturing eleven prisoners and a light machine-gun. During the whole day he set a very fine example of determined courage, and, although seriously wounded, carried on until his company was reorganised.'
