Bar to Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Near Hebuterne on 25th May 1918, Corpl Hammond was working with a gun team beside a dump of Stokes shells, just behind the position was hit with a Minenwerfer, which wounded one man, and set fire to a large number of propelling charged for Stokes shells. The explosion was observed by the enemy who at once shelled the place with field guns. Corpl Hammond seeing that the fire was nearing some fuses and detonators, at great personal risk, ran forward extinguished the fire, and rendering the ?Allways? fuses harmless, saved the dump from blowing up. By his prompt and courageous action this NCO, undoubtedly saved many casualties to the men who were working near by.'

He also personally dressed his wounded men and was the means of forming stretcherbearers to take them away. He was a great example to his men during the whole of the advance and showed great gallantry under fire, as well as great devotion to duty.'
