Military Medal

'East of Ypres on the 4th October 1917 this soldier displayed the greatest gallantry, devotion to duty, and fine leadership. After the NCO in charge of his section had been killed, he assumed command of and led his section. When an enemy machine-gun was holding up the advance and causing many casualties, he led his section against it and bombed and killed the crew and captured the gun. Throughout the action his sterling courage and fine leadership were a magnificent example to his men.'
