Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry in action near Gommecourt on July 16th, 1918. In the course of a minor operation on 16th July this N.C.O. led a bombing attack down a trench. His platoon was strongly attacked by the enemy who were out-ranging our bombs. Seeing this Lance-Corporal Baker rushed forward with the bayonet and got to close quarters. He killed one of the enemy and succeeded in putting the rest to flight. His prompt valour alone made possible the capture of the position.'
