Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On the 1st October 1918, during an attack on enemy positions east of Manieres, this N.C.C. who was in charge of a left flank platoon, showed most magnificent courage and ability in the handling of his men. At a very critical stagfe during an enemy counter-attack, although qounded, this N.C.O. remained with his platoon and organised a defensive flank. He personally supervised the retirement of his men under intense enemy fire, and by his splendid example and excellent command enabled his platoon to reach the defensive line without being surrounded and cut off. After satisfying himself that the enemy attack had been stopped, he handed over his command and went back to have his wounds dressed. His conduct throughout was magnificent and he inspired his men in a most remarkable manner.'
