'He is a Lewis Gunner and did excellent work during the capture of Messines on 7th June 1917. An enemy party was holding up his section with machine gun and rifle fire. He dashed forward and brought his gun into action from a commanding position and drove the enemy party off, killing a number of them, thereby enabling the advance to proceed.'

Bar to Military Medal

'For conspicuous bravery and skill during the attack on the Passchendaele Ridge on 12th October 1917. He commanded a Lewis Gun team and established an advanced post. On his own gun being destroyed, he brought a captured German machine gun into action and continued to sweep the enemy's position.His work was of a particularly high order.'
