Embarked Port Said, Egypt, and proceeded overseas to France, 9 April 1916. Admitted to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance, Armentieres, and transferred to Casualty Clearing Station, 13 July 1916 (bronchitis); to No 35 General Hospital, Calais, 14 July 1916; reported 'dangerous ill', 27 July 1916; to England, and admitted to No 2 London General Hospital, Chelsea, 28 July 1916; transferred to No 2 NZ General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, 16 August 1916.
