Embarked Wellington, 19 January 1917; admitted to ship's hospital, 30 January 1917 (gonorrhoea); discharged from hospital, 16 March 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 23 March 1917, and marched in to Sling Camp.

Proceeded overseas to France, 25 May 1917.

Wounded in action, 14 November 1917 (gun shot wound, face: mild); admitted same day to No 3 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to No 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 16 November 1917; to No 2 Convalescent Depot, Rouen, 21 November 1917; to NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 27 January 1918; to 4th Brigade, 11 February 1918.

Wounded in action (second occasion), 8 March 1918 (gassed), and admitted to 1/2 West Riding Field Ambulance; transferred same day to No 2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station; to England, 13 March 1918, and admitted same day to Lewisham Military Hospital; to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 17 March 1918; to Hornchurch Convalescent Hospital, 8 May 1918; discharged to Codford, 6 July 1918.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 25 October 1918; relinquished rank of Lance Corporal, 12 December 1918.

Found guilty, 21 February 1919, of being absent without leave from 2359, 12 January, till apprehended, 0300, 15 February 1919: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited a total of 34 days' pay.

Commenced return to New Zealand on board 'Waimana', 23 June 1919; discharged, 21 July 1919.
