Admitted to NZ General Hospital, Cairo, 30 December 1915 (catarrh and jaundice); discharged to Convalescent Home, Heliopolis, 16 January 1916; joined No 4 Company, Zeitoun, 10 February 1916. Embarked Egypt to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 9 April 1916. Recommended for a Commission in the NZEF. Detached to England, 18 April 1917. Commissioned as 2nd Lt, 11 June 1917.
