Mentioned in Despatches 'Special good work at Assey Road near Flers on the 15th September 1916. He reorganised the remnants of two companies of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd New Zealand (Rifle) Brigade and, through his left flank was in the air, and casualties were heavy, held on for five hours. He inspired his men by his coolness and utter disregard of danger. He was killed on the morning of 16th September. He was previously wounded early on the morning of the 13th September. He had performed specially good work since the arrival of his Unit in France last April. This officer worked on the staff on several occasions and showed great zeal and ability. His loss is a serious one to his Unit.'
