Distinguished Service Order

'November 26-30 1915. During a period of very bad weather when roads were nearly impassable for mules it was only by constant supervision and the most careful arrangement that a supply of water and food was maintained. December 18-19 1915. Also during the evacuation of the Anzac position, Major Avery, though thrown on his own resources, by his skilful manipulation of the means at his disposal and his untiring efforts kept the troops of the division supplied up to the end. This officer has done very good work ever since he took up the work of Senior Supply Officer, & is deserving of special mention.'

He succeeded to the position of A.A. & Q.M.G. after very good service as D.A.Q.M.G., and his work has been of a very high order.
