Mentioned in Despatches

'While reconnoitring the assembly line with a NCO of another patrol, he assisted in the capture of some 80 Germans who were still holding out in front of the position of assembly. Just as the barrage opened both his platoon sergeant and corporal were killed, when he immediately took command. After passing Vertgneurl his command was held up by heavy enfilade machine-gun fire, and his personal example in leading the men forward in spite of the fire enabled the whole line to advance.'
