Embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 7 april 1916.

Charged cost of replacing hat and puggaree: losing government property, 5 May 1916.

Promoted Sergeant, 25 September 1916.

Detached to Brigade School, 25 May 1917; rejoined Bn, 1 June 1917.

Promoted Warrant Officer Class II, 19 June 1917, and appointed Company Sergeant Major.

Wounded in action, 21 August 1917 (gassed), and admitted to No 4 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, and then to No 2 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 22 August 1917; to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 24 August 1917; to England, 28 August 1917, and admitted to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 31 August 1917; transferred to NZ Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 24 October 1917; to NZ convalescent Depot, Codford, 12 December 1917.

Married Pearl Ethel PARISH, spinster, Parish Church, Hornchurch, 4 May 1918.

Admitted to No 3 NZ General Hospital, Codford, 2 October 1918 (bronchial catarrh).

Commenced return to New Zealand on board HMNZT 'Ruahine', 3 November 1919; discharged (no longer physically fit for War Service on account of illness contracted on Active Service), 13 February 1920.
